Our Purpose and Approach
SpokeUP provides alternative provision across Devon, Somerset and surrounding counties offering a practical and engaging approach for vulnerable and disengaged students.

Using hands on bicycle maintenance combined with structured mentoring and pastoral support, our programmes help learners build confidence, develop essential social skills and re-engage with education. We work directly in schools to deliver personalised interventions that compliment the existing curriculum and support the needs of each individual student.

Founded in 2023 by Dan Johnson, an experienced secondary school Drama teacher with nearly 15 years experience in the classroom and a lifelong passion for cycling, SpokeUP brings a unique blend of teaching expertise and practical knowledge. Dan’s experience working with students facing complex social and economic challenges has shaped a provision focused on positive engagement of at-risk learners.

"I have worked in communities with unique social and economic challenges, had students in my classrooms who struggled with what others may consider even the most basic of social skills and have seen disengaged students slip into lifestyles and make decisions which can have lasting negative consequences on their lives.Throughout all of this I have always strived to make those students feel safe, welcome and wanted in my classrooms. With SpokeUP I have the opportunity, skills and determination to focus that passion into helping the most at-risk and vulnerable children in a school to build relationships, develop vital social skills and change their direction of travel to one of positivity and productiveness"

Turn Potential into Progress

Our ultimate aim is to see a positive difference in the young people we work with.

Reducing Exclusions and Re-Engaging Learners

SpokeUP delivers alternative provision in Devon and surrounding counties designed to reduce exclusions and re-engage students who struggle in traditional classrooms. Our programmes provide schools with practical solutions that focus on behaviour, engagement and measurable improvement.

Practical Skills and Mentoring Support

Through bicycle maintenance, mentoring and behaviour support, learners develop real world skills, confidence and motivation. These experiences give students a renewed sense of purpose and improve their ability to succeed both in and out of school.

Partnering With Schools and Multi Academy Trusts

We work in close partnership with schools and multi-academy trusts to deliver tailored interventions. Each programme is designed to meet the needs of vulnerable learners while aligning with the school’s wider educational objectives.
